About Qiana Martin
She didn’t study
soccer culture
from the sidelines.
The game
Soccer became material.
Qiana’s relationship with the game has taken her from women’s club soccer in Rio de Janeiro to futsal in Portugal and footvolley in Colombia.
Ahead of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, she authored independent cultural guides to Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Years inside the game eventually became material for music, storytelling and cultural work.

The music
Then the music met the game.
Her early artistic formation began with classical piano, church choir and voice-led performance. Her work now draws from Black American folk traditions, spirituals, blues, jazz, spoken word and call-and-response.
What might the world’s game sound like through the traditions that shaped me?
Soccer Watch Night is one answer. The American Soccer Songbook™ is the larger body of work still unfolding.
